Mission Statement

We offer hope, purpose, and meaning for adults with intellectual disabilities. Our client-centered programs provide a path to lead productive lives while giving back to their families and communities.

Growth and development

Who We Are

The Muhlenberg County Opportunity Center believes that all individuals, regardless of disability, deserve the opportunity to contribute to their communities. We actively promote the inclusion of adults with intellectual disabilities who have been diagnosed with one or more mental health disorders through client centered programs.

In 2018 MCOC launched the EXPLORE Program, a Behavioral Health Multi Specialty Group through Kentucky Medicaid. In this program, clients and their families develop a treatment plan with an on-site Clinical Social Worker and trained Community Support Associate. The goal of this collaboration is to assess the individual needs and abilities of each person while identifying a strategic approach that maximizes independent functioning and quality of life.

Additionally, MCOC operates an onsite thrift store and donation center, both providing vocational opportunities for our clients.

Our History

MCOC was established in 1966 as a private non-profit organization. It had served as a sheltered workshop for intellectually disabled adults for over 50 years. While this model proved valuable for 53 years, approaches have progressed on how to best provide services for this underserved population.

In 2018, we expanded our services and became a Medicaid Behavioral Health Multi-Specialty group. In the EXPLORE program, clients work directly with a Community Support Associate to improve their health through different mentally and physically engaging activities.

How We Make a Difference

EXPLORE Program

In the EXPLORE program, clients are paired with a Community Support Associate (CSA). The assigned mentor is trained to utilize a variety of psychiatric and behavioral tools to support their client in developing emotional regulation skills, crisis coping skills, enhancing interpersonal skills, and improving daily living skills to increase independence

Work Center

MCOC partners with Plastic Products Co. Inc., a local plastics manufacturer to provide vocational training in an inclusive environment. Clients develop their fine motor and time management skills while achieving attainable goals and earning a paycheck.

Volunteer Program

A component of a client's treatment plan is engaging with other local organizations and nonprofits. We encourage our clients and their mentors to volunteer their time to the local community.

Attire to Inspire: A Fashion Show Fundraiser

In March of 2022, MCOC hosted "Attire to Inspire: A Fashion Show Fundraiser". Through this event we promoted MCOC and our onsite thrift store Opptastic.

Clients and their CSAs modeled formal wear while enjoying music and a raffle.

Say Yes to a Prom Dress

The "Say Yes to a Prom Dress" program was launched in the spring of 2022 with a simple vision in mind: to provide formal wear for young men and women who may not have access to affordable attire. Between donations from the local community and other resources, we were able to provide Muhlenberg County teens with an affordable option for prom wear. Our gowns and suits included gently used pieces as well as never been worn items.

We hope to expand this program into the fall and winter months for Homecoming and Winter Formal.
